Evaluation

I had done a lot of research into creating my magazine cover, contents page and double page spread. The front page is a very stereotypical music magazine front cover, from what i had researched, most urban music magazines cover try and make it very relaxed by using few colours in a colour scheme, or they try and make it very energetic by using a lot of colours in a colour scheme and having a lot of cover lines, My magazine has followed this trend, it has a very relaxed urban atmosphere with just 2 main colours running through which are orange and grey. Front covers of magazines also try to use use teasers in their cover lines in order to attract readers and make them stand out amongst others on the shelf, my magazine is doing exactly this, the cover lines which have been used are teasers as to what the reader can expect inside, also used in my cover in order to reach different parts of my potential target market, which is almost compulsory in real music magazines, are cover lines that will aim at different parts of the potential target audience, for example i have talked about Kanye west tour dates, so this will generally target a much younger audience, but also a cover line which has been included which is about old hip hop legends coming back, so this targets mainly the older generation of urban music fans. My contents page uses the typical conventions or a real music magazine, usually there is 1 main image with a piece of contents relating to it, i have managed to achieve exactly this, i have represented Eminem in my contents page and linked a page number to the image, so it helps relate the image to the magazine. The double page spread develops on the idea of real music magazine double page spread because most commonly there will be a large picture taking over most of the page and a little writing, or a even mix of both writing and images, but I'm mine i have used 3 images, almost creating a timeline where they get bigger and into a more postured pose every time, and the article is on both sides of these images, a small introduction is shown at the start between the first to pictures, then there is a whole paragraph of question and answer on the second page.

My magazine represents the young urban social group, it is obviously targeted at a young audience who are fans of music. the main story of my magazine is about Lil Wayne, a very popular rapper who is famous for being known as 'the best rapper in the world' and i have used him as a link to tie my target audience with the magazine, it is very important to appeal to your audience through use of what your magazine is about and who it is about, is is very obvious that 'Flip Side' magazine is targeting a younger audience, also this is shown in the use of cover lines on my front cover. as the front cover is the first thing the reader will look at, it is important to make sure that it appeals to them, so the use of cover lines i have used target very well to an audience who are also going to be interested in the double page spread, the cover lines are mainly about hip hop artists and celebrities that would appeal to the audience i am targeting, also the image is of probably the most famous artist int the music industry right now, Lil Wayne, so before readers are even indulged into reading the cover lines, the image first of all will appeal to them massively, so it all ties together to make a collage of persuasive techniques to attract a reader as if they were to see the magazine on a shelf in a store, it helps it to stand out compared to others, which is what real music magazines really intend to achieve with their front covers.

Flip Side magazine feedback

Front Page Feedback

Dean Ramsay
Positives- I like the orange of the colour scheme, it stands out to the reader. The main image I also like, the pose he is in reflects his music style.
Negatives - There is quite a lot of space left around the magazine which could have been taken up by more cover lines, or by making the image bigger.

Oliver Warden
Positives - White background helps other features stand out
Image is large and eye catching
Negatives - loads of different colours overthrow me

Chris Rowland
Positives - It looks professional and eye catching, the colour scheme is not too power but it still stands out which is good.
Negatives - Try adding things such as a bar code, date of release and price tag to make it look more legit.

Contents Page Feedback

Dean Ramsay
Positives - The main image is well edited, and the text that is going over the main image shows the reader who he is. I like how the colour scheme has been carried over from the front cover, which creates a house style theme.
Negatives - There is a lot of space around the contents page, which could have been taken up by more article titles.

Oliver Warden
Positives - the colour scheme links up well with the orange being eye catching and the black contrasting the background
Negatives - the image doesn't fill the left side of the page enough, too much space.

Chris Rowland
Positive - i like the colour scheme it goes well together and the orange makes It stand out more, the posture of the image is really good as well.
Negative - there is a bit of space that could have been filled up with maybe another picture of it the picture already being used was enlarged

Double Page Spread Feedback

Dean Ramsay
Positive - I like how the questions and the answers are a different colour, so you can tell which one is the question and which one is the answer. I also like how you have added orange, which carries on from the front cover.
Negatives - I don't like the background colour against the red and the blue.

Oliver Warden
Positives - Large image is well used, like he is leaning against fold of the page
colour scheme is eye catching
Negatives - too spacious around edges.

Chris Rowland
Positives - i like the colour scheme, the orange and red are bright colours that are very attractive, also i like how hes used the images making them get bigger and changing position every time
Negatives - the background colour would have looked better if it was abit different from the front page, but it helps link it to the magazine

Music magazine double-page article production

Step 1: This is the start of my double page spread, i started by getting the background colour the same as my front page, but the effect is different, instead of using grey fading into white then back into grey from top to bottom, on my double page spread the white starts on the bottom right corner and gradually fades into grey as it reaches out to the top left corner. Also i started by putting in the title of the article, i tried different fonts and sizes and the style i have chosen seems to go best with my idea, it allows plenty more space for pictures and articles. The page number has been included in the article only on the bottom right (4), the page number for page 3 has not been included because i researched other music magazines and found that in double page spreads usually there is only 1 page number included.
Step 2: Next i included the main picture i was going to use, after I had edited it.The image has been edited to align it with the middle crease of the double page spread, so it looks as though the artist is leaning on the crease as though it was a wall.

Step 3: Next I added the start of my article, i used a different font for the first letter "L", i had looked through popular magazines such as Vibe and seen that this is a popular technique used to help draw attention to the article.
Step 4: After the first part of the article had been inserted, i realised that there was too much space that was not going to be filled up without putting in more images and making the article longer, so i edited more images of the artist but also included the image used on the front page to make almost a timeline of images, going from the artist crouching in a small image, to standing in a medium sized image, to him then leaning back in a large image taking up most of the second page. The article had been made longer to make it wrap around the images and make the page look more compact and filled.
Step 5: Now the Double page spread is starting to look more realistic, a Question & Answer article has been placed in to fill the page up, i have used the colours red and blue in this part to help distinguish between the questions and answers, also i have made sure that the answers by the artist are quite long so the reader can get more out of the magazine. also included is a "EXCLUSIVE Interview" sign, this helps the spread look more realistic and eye catching so it helps it to compete against other major music magazines

Step 6: This is my final version of the Double Page Spread. To finalise my spread I put on the last few touches. by inserting another convention "Free Lil Wayne Poster Included", It makes it look more realistic and helps bring it to life, luckily everything went well together so there was not many touches to be done.

Music magazine contents page production

Step 1: I used the same template as my front cover to do my conclusion. Also to stick to the colour scheme i went with a orange title so it relates to the magazine. I used very formal plain font for the title because it makes it look neat and stops the reader looking at too many things.
Step 2: Next i added the edited photo i made for the contents. i had chosen to put the image in front of the title to make it come more alive, also i have made it so the artists left foot is hanging off the page, so again this gives it a feel of the page coming alive but also makes it seem like the page is a room and we have only used a small space of it. the way the artist is positioned is so that his back is facing the actual information in the contents, so it makes it seem back to back so attention with drawn to both the picture and the contents.
Step 3: This is my final version of my contents page, i had added in the actual contents here and also the page number in orange, the prime colour running throughout the magazine, a page has been related to the image as "15, The real slim shady", so again this will appeal to the audience and it is in different font to the rest of the conventions in order to make it stand out and be able to be linked to the picture.

Music Magazine Cover Production

Step 1: to start with, i made the background into a mixture of grey and white using the affect where it starts as grey at the top then it fades into white as it goes into the middle then back into grey as it heads towards the bottom of the page. i placed a black sell-line with white writing, this helps it stand out on the magazine and draws readers eyes, also i included artists that are going to be featured in the magazine so it helps convince consumers to buy it, also the white font goes with the background colour scheme and helps it blend in. The title is orange and large, also starts from the left, this is because when you read anything you always assume to look at the top left, so instantly viewers will be forced to look at the title which will draw them in to look at the rest of the front cover. the orange font makes it stand out on top of the grey and white background, therefor if it was to be placed on a shelf the title would stand out. a star has been placed between 'Flip' and 'Side' to make it stand out more, also it gives it a more urban feel and helps it relate to the genre of urban music hip hop and Rap.
Step 2: next i have put in a edited image, the crouching image makes it look very unique and also the clothes are the same colour as the background so it creates a colour scheme that goes well together. the image had been edited so it will fit perfectly to make it look as though the artist is crouching and the magazine is behind him, rather than him being placed on the magazine.
Step 3: Cover lines have been edited in this stage, colour scheme orange and white running throughout them. the main cover line that stands out is "Lil Wayne", this is the cover line which has been used to go with the image, so automatically viewers are drawn to the image and the cover line that goes with it, this is linked to the double page spread so it helps the magazine come together.
Step 4: This is the final version of the front cover. an extra cover line has been added to the bottom, after step 3 it seemed to be a big gap at the bottom that needed to be filled, so a teaser has been put there saying "Kanye East, New tour dates revealed for Asia", so it teases the consumer to look inside the magazine to see when the tour dates are.

Music magazine double-page photo shoot

This image is very good, the body language is very relaxed and 'cool', having him leaning back on a wall allows me to put him anywhere on the page and give an illusion that he is leaning against a piece of text or end of a page. the artist is posing and putting up the 'peace' sign with his finger, this gives it a very relaxed feel and it is a typical urban hand signal used by the artist, Lil Wayne specially which is who this artist is meant to be.

This is The edited version of the picture, i have edited out the background so it allows me to place it anywhere on the double page spread.

This is the second image used on the double page spread, the body language is very dominant, having him stand straight with his arms forward almost edmands attention, the dominance helps bring importanace to not only the image but also the page.
This is the edited version of the image, the image still has the same effect in terms of demanding attention
This is an image which i have not used, this is because of the structure of his pose, having him lean against the wall with his left leg up almost hides his left leg, and when it comes to editing it, the leg might not look very good. also compared to the other similar picture, where his right leg is up and leaning against the wall instead, this one does seem to have the same impact.

Music magazine contents photo shoot

This is the image that has been used in the contents, the body language is very masculine and demanding, it is of the artist standing with his arms crossed leaning a little back, so it almost dominates the page and demands attention, so it helps readers to be attracted to the page it will be placed on.
This is the edited version after i took out the background. the dominant structure is still in the image and now is allowed to be put onto the contents page
This is a picture i took, i did not use this because of the body language, his hands are in his pocket and does not have the same affect of him leaning back a little.

Music magazine cover photo shoot

The artist is looking directly at the camera, so when this image is placed on the front cover it will appear as though he is looking directly at the reader. the body language is very relaxed, he is crouching with his hands on his legs held together, so it gives it a vibe of a relaxed atmosphere and makes the reader have a sense of the same atmosphere, so it affects the reader in both ways of changing there atmosphere but also entertaining and informing the reader on what the magazine is about

Music magazine double-page article planning

This is the draw up plan of my double page spread, i have chosen to go with the third 1 (bottom left). the title is going through the middle of where the 2 pages meet, so i will have to make sure that half the title doesn't disappear where the pages fold in. the image is going to be on the artist sitting with their legs out, their body will be on the left side of the page, and the legs coming across the right page, the article will be above their legs and below the title, so it will be a small article, but i want the main focus to be on the artist, but i have design it so it seems that the article is the centre with everything drawn around it, so it will no be left to the side with minimum importance and eye catching.

Music magazine contents page planning

These are the draw ups for my contents page. i have chosen to go with the last one on the bottom right. It is a basic contents page the title is at the top in the centre, then the image will be the most eye catching, it will take all of the right and centre of the single page up, then leave room for the contents to be on the right hand side, the actual contents wont be that long, i will make it more centered of the page and make it blend in with the picture because i want the picture to be the eye catcher of the page.

Music magazine cover planning

These are the 4 ideas i drew up for the plan of the front cover of my music magazine. i have drew up different ideas of what a magazine cover could look like. the first one on the top left is which i have chosen to go with, i believe this is the best suited plan for a music magazine, the Mast-Head will be at the top in large capital letters with the sell line above it. The image will be very large in the centre of the page so it will attract the audiences eye depending on which artist it is, and around the image are my cover lines, i have chosen to do 5 coverlines because the majority of my results front he questionnaire prefer 3 - 5 coverlines. the reason i like this plan is because it is very neat and organised but at the same time it can look entertaining and eye catching if the right colour scheme, coverlines and images are used.

Questionaire

these are my results from the questionaire i handed out on music magazine research, the results show a very clear pattern on what people prefer in a magazine. On the front page 100% of people agreed that there should only be 1 person on the front page and this does make sense as you wouldnt want the front page being really busy, there should be only 1 main attraction. I asked "how many cover lines do you think should be on the front cover?" , I found the answers to be spread out amoungst the 3 answers, but i agree with the majority who believe that there should be 3 - 5 coverline on the front cover. about 75% of people thought that the Mast head should go at the top of the page, this is the case in most music magazine which i have researched. I also asked questions about which artist people like the most, so i could get an idea on which artist i could use in my magazine, the graph indicates that most went with Lil' Wayne and Eminem, so this helps me to see which celebrity on the front page will attract eyes.

This Music Magazine double page spread is of the band 'Black Eyed Peas', this magazine is very unique instead of having the photo of the artist focused on 1 spot of the magazine, it takes the whole left page and the last artist is mainly in the right hand page. There is a colour scheme through this spread of white, black and a light brown colour. and we see the lead singer of the group only wearing this light brown colour as the rest are seen in very dull white, black and greys. This makes him stand out and instantly gives him importance in the group, and the paragraph above the picture titles 'will he won't he' is certainly about the main artist Will.i.am. The main paragraph at the end of the right page is in very small font in black writing, so the main purpose of this magazine was not about the information but more about the photo of the artists where our eye is instantly drawn to.
This double spread is very eye catching and again seems to be more about the picture of the artist, in this case Lilly Allen, rather than the information it obtains in the paragrahs. there are 4 very small paragraphs on the bottom left of the of the double page spread, these seem to have some importance as all the image and big title are spread around it, so it almost centres the whole double page around them small paragraphs, even though they are not in the centre of the page. the main title " People think i'm an attention seeker, but i'm just honest" has been done in a very eye catching way, the style it is in is like they have cut each letter out of another magazine or newspaper, it steriotypically represents young girls who would do the same in their diarys and it is also a quote so it seems more to be out of a girls diary, who in this case would be the artist on the right Lilly Allen. the colour scheme that goes through the spread is red, black and white, this makes the red seem to stand our more as balck and white are very dull colours, so it makes Lilly Allen  more eye catching so readers will straight away be able to identify what the spread is about.
This spread is about florence from the band 'florence and the machines'. the colour scheme through out is mainly black and red but there is also touches of grey in the spread. The information is on the right of the page so it seems to come second after the image, so instantly our eyes are drew to the image of the artist sat on what seems to be a box with black and red striped sheet over it, which appears to be the american flag. this links to the large writing which goes across the 2 pages which says 'USA', which shows that this magazine is an american magazine aimed mainly at the american audience.

Music magazine contents page research

This magazine contents page is very dull and seemingly boring by using the dull colours black, grey and white, but a small amount of red has also been used which is very eye-catching. It is of a red heart being held by another person, which appears to be a woman’s arm, holding the red heart above Kanye west heart, this could be a metaphor for his heart being held or stolen by someone else. The contents information is on the right of the page in very short font, so we immediately see that the actual information is not as important as the picture of the artist Kanye West. The mast-head “contents” has been split up into 3 separate lines almost making it 3 separate words, this is very eye catching and almost a puzzle so it could be a bit entertaining.

This contents page uses the contistant colours of black & white. the title has been split into 3 separate lines, this is very eye catching as it almost seems as a puzzle so automatically pushes the reader to read it. the image is of a woman, famous hip hop singer Ciara, lying down with her legs up, this is a sexual image used to target fashion icons. the actual contents is in small on the right hand side in black, so it seems at the importance of this contents page is not the information it holds, but the image of a famous woman.

Music Magazine cover Research

This magazine has used the traditional contrasting colours black and white but have also included in red to make it more appealing and eye catching. The mast-head is in sans-serif in capital red font, this is very appealing as is stands out from the rest of the page, only a Small usage of red has been used so anything in red stands out more than anything written in black, for example the in the cover lines, the heading that stands out the most is "Strips down" and "10+ pages etc". The cover lines on the left are all about Beyonce who is seen in the middle of the magazine, a very beautiful woman who is appealing to men so this hip hop magazine can almost certainly be mainly aimed at men. The Sell line is of just 4 very popular and famous hip hop/R&B artists: Ne-Yo, Rich Boy, Kelly Rowland and Fabolous. these artist are all seen in the same font and style as the title but in black, so it separates it from the master-head.

This is another Magazine from the same company, is has used the same font ans style for the Mast-head and Sell line. the colour scheme used is similar, simply the black has been replaced with blue. it uses the same concept of using a single colour to highlight the most important parts in both the mast-head and the cover line, in the cover lines the colour white has been sued to highlight very famous hip hop artists T.I and Jay-z, this helps the magazine catch peoples eye and appeal more to is audience against its competition. this magazine has included a very unique cover line which is a blackberry Friend request bar code, so people can scan this bar code with their blackberry's and will have vibe as a friend on blackberry, this is very good for promotion and advertisement as "Vibe" as a company can then go on a advertise new products and promotions to its audience.

This 'VIBE' magazine like the top 1 has re-introduced the colour scheme of Red, Black and White. but it has also put in touches of gold, this makes the magazine seem as though it has more to offer, as if each colour is something different the magazine has to offer. unlike the other VIBE magazines, this 1 has included the bar code on the front of it, and has not put a sell line on it. there are less cover lines in this magazine, there seems to only be 1 on the left in very large writing, so it seems to be the sub-heading and has a link to the main title. this magazine is published to be about the famous rapper T.I we see him in the centre with his name next to him in the cover line on the left, this immediately help the audience identify him and attracts potential customers. his clothes almost seem to disappear into the back ground, the white is very similar but the black untied bow tie which adds conflicts in the colour and makes it stand out more.

This Vibe magazine has a strict colour scheme through out, it uses yellow, white and black. The mast-head is the same as it is in all Vibe magazine, at the top going across the whole page in the colour that stands out the most, in this instance it is in white. The image is in the centre of the page and like in many other Vibe magazines the black clothes the artist 'Drake' is wearing is the same as the black background, so it makes the  magazine and the picture come together as one. The writing on the Artists top that says 'Unstoppable' in capitals is very eye catching and promotes the artist. the cover lines are in yellow and white, these 2 bright colour go together so it makes them stick out a lot compared to the black background, so if seen on a shelf amongst competing magazines, this edition would be extremely eye catching. the bar code is vertically in a box on the bottom left along with other writing which seems to be extra cover lines which would appeal to a small minority of its target audience, they have put this too the side so the magazine doesn't have a contrasting target audience therefore the main target audience can be targeted.

Preliminary task Contents page Ideas

This contents page from a magazine about the Hollywood lifestyle is very consistent in using the colour red, gold, black & white, the repetition shows professionalism. the imagine has been put on the right showing a woman standing and the actually contents is the same lengths as her. The Gold title gives it Independence away from everything else, it makes it stick out and seem to be the important part and catches the readers eye.

This magazine is similar to the one above by using the consistent colours of black & white. the title has been split into 3 separate lines, this is very eye catching as it almost seems as a puzzle so automatically pushes the reader to read it. the image is of a woman, famous hip hop singer Ciara, lying down with her legs up, this is a sexual image used to target fashion icons. the actual contents is in small on the right hand side in black, so it seems at the importance of this contents page is not the information it holds, but the image of a famous woman.

Preliminary Front Cover

The format of my magazine is going to be simular to magazine i have already looked up. i am going to put the master-head at the centre top with the Date & Price abouve it. then in the centre of the magazine i am going to use my image as the starting strucute and put my Cover lines around it on both the left a\nd right hand side of it. the barcode is going to be at the bottom right of the page so it does not ruin the image of the magazine but is still in plain site.

This is my magazine cover for the me college magazine, the colour scheme i have chosen to use is black as the back ground and orange and white for the coverlines. i have included the price on the bottom right of the page so it is on the page but does not stand out with everything else.

This is my contents page for the preliminary task, i have carried on with the white and orange colour scheme. i have inserted a banner in the title because it relates to college as you have college banners. Then the information is down the middle in the bottom, i have not included an image because i would prefer that the contents page be more about the information that it holds in this magainze rather than what the picture shows.

Preliminary Task

The Preliminary task is to create a School/college front magazine cover and a contents page. the front page must have a photograph of a student in a medium close up (mid shot), pieces of text and an appropriate title.

This magazine cover shows us a good colour scheme of black, green and white, this is not only used in the text but we also see it int he imagine, which is a mid shot of a man wearing a white top with a black jacket. the cover also shows Cover lines which would attract the target audience such as "why we love blackberry". the blackberry is a very popular students phone because of its Black berry messenger applications where students can talk to each other online 24/7 for free

This magazine is showing simularities to the one abouve, but using opposite colours, instead of black we get the bright white and instead of a green we also se a bright orange, so this magazine is very bright with touches of light blue aswell, this will easily attract eyes. the mid shot of a man in a white outfit is a good technique used to blend it with the back ground and make the whole magazine come together as one. this magazine has also used another Apple inc. product, the IPAD, which is a very famouse product for students.
