Evaluation

I had done a lot of research into creating my magazine cover, contents page and double page spread. The front page is a very stereotypical music magazine front cover, from what i had researched, most urban music magazines cover try and make it very relaxed by using few colours in a colour scheme, or they try and make it very energetic by using a lot of colours in a colour scheme and having a lot of cover lines, My magazine has followed this trend, it has a very relaxed urban atmosphere with just 2 main colours running through which are orange and grey. Front covers of magazines also try to use use teasers in their cover lines in order to attract readers and make them stand out amongst others on the shelf, my magazine is doing exactly this, the cover lines which have been used are teasers as to what the reader can expect inside, also used in my cover in order to reach different parts of my potential target market, which is almost compulsory in real music magazines, are cover lines that will aim at different parts of the potential target audience, for example i have talked about Kanye west tour dates, so this will generally target a much younger audience, but also a cover line which has been included which is about old hip hop legends coming back, so this targets mainly the older generation of urban music fans. My contents page uses the typical conventions or a real music magazine, usually there is 1 main image with a piece of contents relating to it, i have managed to achieve exactly this, i have represented Eminem in my contents page and linked a page number to the image, so it helps relate the image to the magazine. The double page spread develops on the idea of real music magazine double page spread because most commonly there will be a large picture taking over most of the page and a little writing, or a even mix of both writing and images, but I'm mine i have used 3 images, almost creating a timeline where they get bigger and into a more postured pose every time, and the article is on both sides of these images, a small introduction is shown at the start between the first to pictures, then there is a whole paragraph of question and answer on the second page.

My magazine represents the young urban social group, it is obviously targeted at a young audience who are fans of music. the main story of my magazine is about Lil Wayne, a very popular rapper who is famous for being known as 'the best rapper in the world' and i have used him as a link to tie my target audience with the magazine, it is very important to appeal to your audience through use of what your magazine is about and who it is about, is is very obvious that 'Flip Side' magazine is targeting a younger audience, also this is shown in the use of cover lines on my front cover. as the front cover is the first thing the reader will look at, it is important to make sure that it appeals to them, so the use of cover lines i have used target very well to an audience who are also going to be interested in the double page spread, the cover lines are mainly about hip hop artists and celebrities that would appeal to the audience i am targeting, also the image is of probably the most famous artist int the music industry right now, Lil Wayne, so before readers are even indulged into reading the cover lines, the image first of all will appeal to them massively, so it all ties together to make a collage of persuasive techniques to attract a reader as if they were to see the magazine on a shelf in a store, it helps it to stand out compared to others, which is what real music magazines really intend to achieve with their front covers.

Front Page Feedback

Dean Ramsay
Positives- I like the orange of the colour scheme, it stands out to the reader. The main image I also like, the pose he is in reflects his music style.
Negatives - There is quite a lot of space left around the magazine which could have been taken up by more cover lines, or by making the image bigger.

Oliver Warden
Positives - White background helps other features stand out
Image is large and eye catching
Negatives - loads of different colours overthrow me

Chris Rowland
Positives - It looks professional and eye catching, the colour scheme is not too power but it still stands out which is good.
Negatives - Try adding things such as a bar code, date of release and price tag to make it look more legit.

Contents Page Feedback

Dean Ramsay
Positives - The main image is well edited, and the text that is going over the main image shows the reader who he is. I like how the colour scheme has been carried over from the front cover, which creates a house style theme.
Negatives - There is a lot of space around the contents page, which could have been taken up by more article titles.

Oliver Warden
Positives - the colour scheme links up well with the orange being eye catching and the black contrasting the background
Negatives - the image doesn't fill the left side of the page enough, too much space.

Chris Rowland
Positive - i like the colour scheme it goes well together and the orange makes It stand out more, the posture of the image is really good as well.
Negative - there is a bit of space that could have been filled up with maybe another picture of it the picture already being used was enlarged

Oliver Warden
Positives - Large image is well used, like he is leaning against fold of the page

Negatives - too spacious around edges.

Chris Rowland
Positives - i like the colour scheme, the orange and red are bright colours that are very attractive, also i like how hes used the images making them get bigger and changing position every time
Negatives - the background colour would have looked better if it was abit different from the front page, but it helps link it to the magazine

Music magazine double-page article production

Step 1: This is the start of my double page spread, i started by getting the background colour the same as my front page, but the effect is different, instead of using grey fading into white then back into grey from top to bottom, on my double page spread the white starts on the bottom right corner and gradually fades into grey as it reaches out to the top left corner. Also i started by putting in the title of the article, i tried different fonts and sizes and the style i have chosen seems to go best with my idea, it allows plenty more space for pictures and articles. The page number has been included in the article only on the bottom right (4), the page number for page 3 has not been included because i researched other music magazines and found that in double page spreads usually there is only 1 page number included.
Step 2: Next i included the main picture i was going to use, after I had edited it.The image has been edited to align it with the middle crease of the double page spread, so it looks as though the artist is leaning on the crease as though it was a wall.

Step 3: Next I added the start of my article, i used a different font for the first letter "L", i had looked through popular magazines such as Vibe and seen that this is a popular technique used to help draw attention to the article.
Step 4: After the first part of the article had been inserted, i realised that there was too much space that was not going to be filled up without putting in more images and making the article longer, so i edited more images of the artist but also included the image used on the front page to make almost a timeline of images, going from the artist crouching in a small image, to standing in a medium sized image, to him then leaning back in a large image taking up most of the second page. The article had been made longer to make it wrap around the images and make the page look more compact and filled.
Step 5: Now the Double page spread is starting to look more realistic, a Question & Answer article has been placed in to fill the page up, i have used the colours red and blue in this part to help distinguish between the questions and answers, also i have made sure that the answers by the artist are quite long so the reader can get more out of the magazine. also included is a "EXCLUSIVE Interview" sign, this helps the spread look more realistic and eye catching so it helps it to compete against other major music magazines

Step 6: This is my final version of the Double Page Spread. To finalise my spread I put on the last few touches. by inserting another convention "Free Lil Wayne Poster Included", It makes it look more realistic and helps bring it to life, luckily everything went well together so there was not many touches to be done.

Music magazine contents page production

Step 1: I used the same template as my front cover to do my conclusion. Also to stick to the colour scheme i went with a orange title so it relates to the magazine. I used very formal plain font for the title because it makes it look neat and stops the reader looking at too many things.
Step 2: Next i added the edited photo i made for the contents. i had chosen to put the image in front of the title to make it come more alive, also i have made it so the artists left foot is hanging off the page, so again this gives it a feel of the page coming alive but also makes it seem like the page is a room and we have only used a small space of it. the way the artist is positioned is so that his back is facing the actual information in the contents, so it makes it seem back to back so attention with drawn to both the picture and the contents.
Step 3: This is my final version of my contents page, i had added in the actual contents here and also the page number in orange, the prime colour running throughout the magazine, a page has been related to the image as "15, The real slim shady", so again this will appeal to the audience and it is in different font to the rest of the conventions in order to make it stand out and be able to be linked to the picture.

Music Magazine Cover Production

Step 1: to start with, i made the background into a mixture of grey and white using the affect where it starts as grey at the top then it fades into white as it goes into the middle then back into grey as it heads towards the bottom of the page. i placed a black sell-line with white writing, this helps it stand out on the magazine and draws readers eyes, also i included artists that are going to be featured in the magazine so it helps convince consumers to buy it, also the white font goes with the background colour scheme and helps it blend in. The title is orange and large, also starts from the left, this is because when you read anything you always assume to look at the top left, so instantly viewers will be forced to look at the title which will draw them in to look at the rest of the front cover. the orange font makes it stand out on top of the grey and white background, therefor if it was to be placed on a shelf the title would stand out. a star has been placed between 'Flip' and 'Side' to make it stand out more, also it gives it a more urban feel and helps it relate to the genre of urban music hip hop and Rap.
Step 2: next i have put in a edited image, the crouching image makes it look very unique and also the clothes are the same colour as the background so it creates a colour scheme that goes well together. the image had been edited so it will fit perfectly to make it look as though the artist is crouching and the magazine is behind him, rather than him being placed on the magazine.
Step 3: Cover lines have been edited in this stage, colour scheme orange and white running throughout them. the main cover line that stands out is "Lil Wayne", this is the cover line which has been used to go with the image, so automatically viewers are drawn to the image and the cover line that goes with it, this is linked to the double page spread so it helps the magazine come together.
Step 4: This is the final version of the front cover. an extra cover line has been added to the bottom, after step 3 it seemed to be a big gap at the bottom that needed to be filled, so a teaser has been put there saying "Kanye East, New tour dates revealed for Asia", so it teases the consumer to look inside the magazine to see when the tour dates are.

Music magazine double-page photo shoot

This image is very good, the body language is very relaxed and 'cool', having him leaning back on a wall allows me to put him anywhere on the page and give an illusion that he is leaning against a piece of text or end of a page. the artist is posing and putting up the 'peace' sign with his finger, this gives it a very relaxed feel and it is a typical urban hand signal used by the artist, Lil Wayne specially which is who this artist is meant to be.

This is The edited version of the picture, i have edited out the background so it allows me to place it anywhere on the double page spread.

This is the second image used on the double page spread, the body language is very dominant, having him stand straight with his arms forward almost edmands attention, the dominance helps bring importanace to not only the image but also the page.
This is the edited version of the image, the image still has the same effect in terms of demanding attention
This is an image which i have not used, this is because of the structure of his pose, having him lean against the wall with his left leg up almost hides his left leg, and when it comes to editing it, the leg might not look very good. also compared to the other similar picture, where his right leg is up and leaning against the wall instead, this one does seem to have the same impact.

Music magazine contents photo shoot

This is the image that has been used in the contents, the body language is very masculine and demanding, it is of the artist standing with his arms crossed leaning a little back, so it almost dominates the page and demands attention, so it helps readers to be attracted to the page it will be placed on.
This is the edited version after i took out the background. the dominant structure is still in the image and now is allowed to be put onto the contents page
This is a picture i took, i did not use this because of the body language, his hands are in his pocket and does not have the same affect of him leaning back a little.

Music magazine cover photo shoot

The artist is looking directly at the camera, so when this image is placed on the front cover it will appear as though he is looking directly at the reader. the body language is very relaxed, he is crouching with his hands on his legs held together, so it gives it a vibe of a relaxed atmosphere and makes the reader have a sense of the same atmosphere, so it affects the reader in both ways of changing there atmosphere but also entertaining and informing the reader on what the magazine is about
